PRELUDE: “Bread for the World” Marilyn Lee, Organist
GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
CALL TO WORSHIP: Charlotte Peterson
Every once in a while it is a good thing to go to the core of what it’s all about. For us, the core is love. It is deep, biding love lived out in the power of the Holy Spirit as we build Christian community and give our lives to love. In this hour we come to grips with this core. In this moment we receive and share this love. Come, let us love God and one another as we enter into a spirit of worship.
HYMN: “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” UMH 5 played by Marilyn Lee
1 Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heav’n, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art.
Visit us with thy salvation;
enter ev'ry trembling heart.
2 Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit
into ev’ry troubled breast.
Let us all in thee inherit,
let us find the promised rest.
Take away the love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be.
End of faith, as its beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Gracious and marvelous God, we come to prayer in this moment, mindful of our tendancy to wander from you. We gather in the Spirit deeply aware of the many distractions that make it difficult to focus on the love you offer; the love that you are. Forgive us, we pray, for the distance we create. Have mercy on us when we succumb to anger and cynicism. Accompany us, we pray, on the path back to you and help us to connect fully with you and with one another as we strive to follow the way of love, the way of Jesus. It’s in his name we pray, AMEN.

CALL TO WORSHIP: Nora Tallent
We are called to this moment of beginning as we seek to live our lives together as a communal act of worship. Come, let us lay down our burdens. Come, let us open our hearts! Come, let us surrender our own point of view so that we might see what God would have us see. Come, let us worship God together!
OPENING HYMN: “O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing!” UMH 57 played by Marilyn Lee
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer's praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!
My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread thro' all the earth abroad
the honors of your name.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy God, we gather this day in prayer, mindful of our shortcomings; aware of our mistakes and our misdeeds. We confess, Holy Spirit that we have not been the church you have called us to be. We have not given our whole selves to the wonder the Gospel. We have not done enough to serve the poor. We have sometimes let anger rather than love overtake us. And, Lord, we participate too much in the sins of our world. Forgive us, we pray. Have mercy on us for our lack of courage and vision. Awaken us we pray for a new day of faithfulness; a new moment of hope. We ask this, we pray this, in the blessed name of Jesus Christ, AMEN.

Though I may speak with bravest fire,

And have not love, my words are vain,
As sounding brass, and hopeless gain.
Though I may give all I possess,
And striving so my love profess,
But not be given by love within,
The profit soon turns strangely thin.

PALM SUNDAY
PRELUDE: “God So Loved the World” Marilyn Lee, Organist
GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
CALL TO WORSHIP: Nora Tallent
Today we line the streets and wave our arms and palm branches!
Today we throw our coats on the street for the donkey and the prophet to pass.
Today we claim Jesus as “The One Who Comes in the Name of the Lord!”
And today we shout loud Hosannas! For truly our God has come to us in Christ Jesus!
Come, let us lift our hearts in worship and celebration as Jesus enters the City!
AMEN
OPENING HYMN: “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna!” (UMH 278) Marilyn Lee
1 Hosanna, loud hosanna
the little children sang;
through pillared court and temple
the lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them,
close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises,
the simplest and the best.
2 From Olivet they followed
mid an exultant crowd,
the victory palm branch waving,
and chanting clear and loud.
The Lord of earth and heaven
rode on in lowly state,
nor scorned that little children
should on his bidding wait.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Sue Sarno
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
Holy God we come to you in prayer this day while the palm branches wave and we shout with the crowds. We come, carried by the excitement, by the wonder and the joy. But we also arrive, Lord, knowing that it is easy to jump and shout for an hour or so. Not so easy is the act of giving our lives over to you. We know this because we have been here before. We know this because we have been caught in moments like this one too many times without following through and offering our lives. Forgive us God. Have mercy on us for half hearted efforts and fearful turning from your call. Forgive our unwillingness to surrender our own wants and desires so that we might devote our whole hearts to you. Pour out a new spirit upon us, we pray, so that on this day we might begin anew the journey of giving our lives to you. Hear us, Lord, and in your mercy, forgive us. This we pray in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

1 All glory, laud, and honor
to you, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel
and David's royal Son,
now in the Lord's name coming,
the King and Blessed One.
2 The company of angels
is praising you on high;
and we with all creation
in chorus make reply.

before you we present.

if thou wilt be my guide.
O let me feel thee near me!

GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
CALL TO WORSHIP: Nora Tallent
For us, worship flows abundantly past the confines of our weekly gatherings.
For us, worship is a way of life.
But we find our center when we come together in prayer, in praise,
in confession and joy.
We find our core when we give ourselves with one voice to God.
So come, let us begin.
Let us join hearts, minds, and spirits as we worship God in this moment.
AMEN
OPENING HYMN: “ Amazing Grace” (UMH 378) Marilyn Lee
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
was blind, but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
‘tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy and wonderful God,
We gather in different places this day to claim our common heart in you.
We reach out from different lives to become a people rooted in your love.
We come in this moment to acknowledge that, simply put, we must do better.
Loving God, we are pushed and lured by a world that would distract us from the
good you would have us do, and we know, we must do better.
Holy Spirit, we are sometimes overwhelmed by our fears and paralyzed in the face of it all, and we know, we must do better.
Awaken us, we pray, so that we might give our whole lives to you.
Enlighten us so that we might see the right paths of healing, hope, and justice.
And forgive us, we pray, for we know that we must do better; in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

CALL TO WORSHIP: Charlotte Peterson
God calls us in this Lenten time to enter a new reality.
It is one that up-ends the money changer’s tables in the Temple.
It is one that tells us that true power is made perfect in weakness.
As we come to worship this day, let us take one step closer to this reality in Christ Jesus. Come, let us journey together in love.
Come, let us worship God together.
OPENING HYMN: “How Great Thou Art” (UMH 77) Marilyn Lee
1) O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee;
How great thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art!
2) When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze; (Refrain)
3) And when I think that God, his son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin; (Refrain)
CALL TO CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy and magnificent God, guide and companion on this journey. We pause in prayerful hope today to breathe deeply of the reality to which you call us. We slow down now in prayer so that we can release the burdens and the brokenness. We cease our constant movement now to look you in the eye and say that we are sorry. Forgive us, we pray, for the times when we have failed to follow the path of your love. Have mercy on us for judging others when you call us not to judge, but to love. Fill us, Holy One, with a newness of spirit so that we might journey with integrity and courage, as we return to the path to travel with you. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ. AMEN.

OPENING HYMN: “Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days” (UMH 269) Played by Marilyn Lee
1 Lord, who throughout these forty days
For us did fast and pray,
Teach us to overcome our sins,

And did the vict'ry win,
O give us strength in You to fight,
In You to conquer sin.

Like Jesus before us, you call us into the desert, Lord, where we come face to face with our own brokenness. We know that, like Jesus, we are often tempted by the world. The scent of power and the lure of judgment and anger are ever before us. We confess that there are moments when we are overcome by temptation; moments when we succumb to anger and cynicism; days when we judge ourselves to be better than others. We confess that we have left undone things that we know we should do, and have done things that we know we should not have done. Forgive us, we pray. Have mercy on us and pour your spirit anew on our whole church so that we may move through this season to the cross and beyond, in Jesus’ name, AMEN.
