GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
CALL TO WORSHIP: Sue Sarno
Holy and marvelous God, still our hearts, we pray, so that we might hear the whispers of your yearning for our lives. Calm our anxious spirits and lighten our burdens so that in this moment we might receive you in praise and thanksgiving. AMEN.
OPENING HYMN: “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” (UMH 203) Played by Marilyn Lee
- Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity. - He comes with succor speedy
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Sue Sarno
Come, let us lay down our burdens before God so that we might be able to open our arms to embrace God’s grace. Let us pray.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
Holy God, if we pause long enough to notice, we will see that change is built into everything in your whole Creation. The change of seasons and the changes that come with age; the change of hearts and minds, and the change of our communities. We confess, Holy One, that we are not always open to change. We admit that change unsettles and frightens us. Forgive us, we pray. Have mercy on us for not being open to the ways of your changing creation. Create in us a responsive spirit and give us a child like joy so that we might walk with you across the landscape of change and new beginnings. We pray this, we ask this in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy God, whose name and substance are love, this day we enter into a sanctuary of the heart. We come together from different places and perspectives as we seek to unburden our hearts. Each one of us, God, has fallen short of your glory. Each one of us, Holy Spirit, has wandered away from truly following the Way of your Son Jesus. Forgive us, we pray. Reach out and pull us back into your orbit of grace and wonder. Have mercy on us, Holy One, and lead us on to a path of faithfulness, a journey of new life. And in it all, help us to release every feeling and emotion that keep us from loving You and others, in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

1 Sing praise to God who reigns above,
the God of all creation,
the God of power, the God of love,
the God of our salvation.
With healing balm my soul is filled
and every faithless murmur stilled:
To God all praise and glory.
2 The Lord is never far away,
but through all grief distressing,
an ever present help and stay,
our peace and joy and blessing.
As with a mother's tender hand,
God gently leads the chosen band:
To God all praise and glory.

This is a day to celebrate new beginnings.
It is a day to lift our eyes to the horizon and to come together in the unity of the Spirit.
This is a moment when we are called to release our fears and our doubts.
This is the time of worship.
Come, let us worship God together!
OPENING HYMN: “Rock of Ages”(UMH 361) played by Marilyn Lee
1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.
2 Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Rob Bickmore
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: led by Sue Sarno
O God of love and justice, we live as a people caught in a storm. Around us rage the powers of anger and violence, the floods of rage and fear. Around us grows a reality that would claim our allegiance and our love. It is not easy to weather the storms, O God, and too often we find ourselves caught up in their fury. We begin to take on anger and frustration, and we participate in the brokenness and suffering which surround us. Forgive us, God of love. Have mercy on us for our unbending spirits and our willful ways. Forgive us, God of justice. Touch us with the newness of life we have in You, and create in us the power to declare Your justice with our lives. For in truth, it is You we claim as Sovereign, and it is to You that we give allegiance -- now and always in the name of Christ. Amen.

Holy One, we come to you this day with hearts that are shaken and a little afraid of how our world will unfold. The world is always a little scary, God, but in these times it feels terrifying. PRAYER OF CONFESSION: led by Sue Sarno
Holy God, we come this days as individuals and as community to unburden our hearts. We come to you in prayer, O Lord, because we are aware of the many ways we have fallen short of glory. Lord, we have left undone so many things, and the knowledge of it pains us. We ask both forgiveness and seek your guidance as we rise to do the things we know you would have us do. Lord, we have also done things that we know we should not have done. Forgive us for those moments when we have wounded with words or action. Have mercy on us, we pray, and give us the courage to see the way before us and the strength to pursue it. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN

1 The first Noel the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Refrain:
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.
2 They looked up and saw a star
shining in the east, beyond them far;
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night. [Refrain]

PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy God of New beginnings, we awake this day to a world that is in pain and chaos. We arise to news that is hard to hear, and we know that we are a part of the picture.
Lord, we did not cause this pandemic, but we are called to be a part of the solution. We confess that we have not always behaved in ways that protect everyone. We admit our impatience to return to what we think is normal. Give us grace, we pray. Forgive us for focusing too much on what we cannot do and give us the courage to do simply what is right. Forgive us for surrendering to fear and give us the power to release our fear as we reach for the light that is your love and power. Holy One, we come with open hearts seeking healing for our world and our church. Grant us the wisdom and the wonder to be that church in this time and in this moment. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

1 Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
2 He comes with succor speedy
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Rob Bickmore
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Elizabeth Truesdell
Gracious God, we feel the vibrating presence of your love as we await your coming in the child Jesus. We feel a rising kind of joy. We sense your longing for us and we know that it is not you but we who are hesitant and frightened. We know that is is we and not you who allow ourselves to be trapped in the web of our wounds and our hurt; our cynicism and our anger. So we pray a Christmas prayer of confession. Forgive us, God, for those things that we have left undone, knowing that you call us to do them. Have mercy on us for those things that we have done that hurt and wound. Prepare us, we pray, for the coming of this child. Awaken in us a new found joy as we take this baby in our arms and accept your precious gift of new life. Hear us, hold us, shake us up as we stand trembling as the angels sing. AMEN

CLOSING HYMN: “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” (UMH 218) played by Marilyn Lee
1 It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven's all-gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.
2 Still through the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o'er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o'er its Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.
