"LIVING INTO THE PROMISE"
Advent 3
PRELUDE: “Fantasia on ‘The First Nowell’” played by Marilyn Lee, Organist
GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
ADVENT WORDS AND CANDLE LIGHTING: Charlotte Peterson
CALL TO WORSHIP: Sue Sarno
The days in which we await the Savior are not so different from those days more than two millenia ago when their world was chaotic and unpredictable; when nothing seemed to be going right. Today, we could look down and see our own chaos and turmoil, or we could live into the promise of God’s coming among us in this season. Now is the time to hear laughter from our mouths; now is the moment to shout for joy. Now is the time to unleash our dreams as we await the certain coming of the Child. Come, let us enter into worship with open hearts and spirits. AMEN.
OPENING HYMN: “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus (UMH 196)” played by Marilyn Lee
- Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart. - Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Sue Sarno
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
God of grace and wonder, we come to you in prayer in this moment to acknowledge our manifold sins and mis-steps. We try, sometimes, to keep pretending that it is not real, that we are all fine and okay when in truth we all fall short of your glory. We have not been an obedient Church, Lord. We have turned a blind eye to the poor and we have not heard the cries of the oppressed. In times of crisis, we confess also God, that we sometimes succumb to fear rather than rising with you in courage. Forgive us, Holy One. Have mercy on us for the times when we have strayed and call us, we pray, to a new and vital faithfulness. Hear us, we pray, as we strive to begin anew in this season of hope. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Advent 1
“The Promise of Abundance”
PRELUDE: “ MEDITATION VENI IMMANUEL” played by Organist, Marilyn Lee
GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE: Charlotte Peterson
CALL TO WORSHIP: Nora Tallent
This day we look back over the years
It was a time not unlike our own.
The days were difficult, and the times were hard.
And through the darkness of those days came the yearning hope of God’s promise.
This promise comes to us also in this moment. In this season.
It is a promise of new life; a promise of hope; a promise of abundance.
Come, let us lay down our burdens and lift up God’s promise to us;
The promise of salvation and new birth.
OPENING HYMN: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness “(UMH 140) played by Organist, Marilyn Lee
1 Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee;
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.
Refrain:
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided.
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
2 Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. [Refrain]
CALL TO CONFESSION: Rob Bickmore
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy God, as we prepare in this season for a birth of new hope, we come to you and confess our hopelessness. As we look to a time when of new life, we come to you to confess that we have participated in the ways of death. And Holy One, as we seek to be your church in this moment, we confess that we sometimes turn away from this task. We confess that we have not always loved you and our neighbor as we have been called to do by your Son Jesus.
Forgive us, we pray. Have mercy on us for the times when we stray and for the moments when we forget who we are and to whom we belong.
Pour out on us, Holy One, a Sprit of promise and possibility. Awaken in us a vibrant vision of our community and our lives together. We seek renewal in your love and salvation through your grace. And we seek this as we humbly give ourselves anew to you through Jesus Christ Our Lord, AMEN.

CALL TO WORSHIP: Elizabeth Truesdell
It’s no secret that we have been on a stressful journey.
It’s no secret that we miss being face to face in worship.
It’s no secret that there are days when we feel tired and worn out.
We all know this.
What we may not remember is that in all of it, God is fully present and fully able to lift us up.
So come, let us give our worries and our stress to God.
Come, let us reach inside and find that inner child who often hides as we get older.
Come, let us abandon all that weighs us down and soar with the Holy Spirit as we worship together. AMEN.
OPENING HYMN: “Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee” (UMH 89) Played by Marilyn Lee
1 Joyful, joyful, we adore You,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before You,
Op'ning to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!
2 All Your works with joy surround You,
Earth and heav'n reflect Your rays,
Stars and angels sing around You,
Center of unbroken praise;
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Praising You eternally!
3 Always giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Loving Father, Christ our Brother,
Let Your light upon us shine;
CALL TO CONFESSION: Nora Tallent

God of love and presence, we pause in prayer now to invite you into our hearts.
Come, holy spirit and seize us with your power.
Come, holy spirit and open our hearts.
Come, holy spirit and teach us the power of vulnerable love.
Come, holy spirit and wash us with the power of your hope.
We know, even in your powerful presence, God, that we do not easily release our anger.
We know, too, Lord Jesus, that you invite us to a spiritual candor that begins the healing work within us. And so, we confess that we have not loved you fully.
We have clung to our own ways and not followed you on the path of forgiveness and new life.
We have not heard the cries of the poor.
And we have not opened our hearts to fully receive you.
Forgive us, we pray. Call us to a joyful wholeness as we build our community anew.
We pray this, we promise to live more fully in you in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Charlotte Peterson
Holy and wonder God, we come before you with a deep awareness of our brokenness. God, we are aware that we have let our addiction to our own point of view cause harm and hurt. Forgive us, we pray. We are aware that we have turned a blind eye to injustice. Have mercy on us, we pray. We are aware that we have been judgmental and harsh, and we crave your forgiveness. And, God of love, we have not loved as you would have us love. Teach us to live into your love, for we know that if we do not love we are far from you. Forgive us, we pray, and touch our hearts with grace and mercy so that we might fully be your church, the very Body of your Son Jesus Christ. It’s in his name we pray this day, AMEN.

1 Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heav'n to earth come down:

all thy faithful mercies crown:
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter ev'ry trembling heart.
2 Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit
into ev'ry troubled breast;
let us all in thee inherit,
let us find the promised rest:
take away the love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its Beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.
3 Come, Almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.
4 Finish, then, thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be:
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee;
changed from glory into glory,
'til in heav'n we take our place,
'til we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.

In the power of God’s loving spirit, we are invited to transformation; to dynamic and total change as we step into the Way of Love. Come, let us worship. Come, let us surrender our anxious spirits to a wonderful God
OPENING HYMN:“The Gift of Love”. (UMH 408) played by Marilyn Lee
Though I may speak with bravest fire,
And have the gift to all inspire,
And have not love, my words are vain,
As sounding brass, and hopeless gain.
Though I may give all I possess,
And striving so my love profess,
But not be given by love within,
The profit soon turns strangely thin.
Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control,
Our spirits long to be made whole.
Let inward love guide every deed;
By this we worship, and are freed.
CALL TO CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Nora Tallent
Gracious God whose name and substance are love, we come this day in painful awareness that we do not always lean into love. God, rather than offer love and forgiveness, we too often provide judgment and anger. Rather than accept your call to be healers in this world, we too often inflict wounds rather than binding them up. God, we know that you did not call your church so that it would follow rules and doctrine. You called your church to be the home of grace and extravagant compassion. Forgive us God, when we lose our way and fall into judgment. Have mercy on us for our anger and the wounds we have inflicted. We pray this day that you will pour out your Holy Spirit on us so that we might have a new beginning in the power of your forgiveness. And in this that we ourselves might offer forgiveness. We ask this, we pray this in the name of our loving Master, Jesus the Christ. AMEN

Blest be the tie that binds
our hearts in Christian love;
the fellowship of kindred minds

Before our Father's throne
we pour our ardent prayers;
our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
our comforts and our cares.
We share our mutual woes,
our mutual burdens bear,
and often for each other flows
the sympathizing tear.
When we are called to part,
it gives us inward pain;
but we shall still be joined in heart,

OPENING HYMN: “Holy, Holy, Holy”. UMH 64 played by Marilyn Lee
1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee
perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

THE LORD'S PRAYER: read in English by Elizabeth Truesdell
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.

CLOSING HYMN: “Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life”. (UMH 427) played by Marilyn Lee
1 Where cross the crowded ways of life,
where sound the cries of race and clan,
above the noise of selfish strife,
we hear your voice, O Son of Man.
2 In haunts of wretchedness and need,
on shadowed thresholds fraught with fears,
from paths where hide the lures of greed,
we catch the vision of your tears.
3 From tender childhood's helplessness,
from human grief and burdened toil,
from famished souls, from sorrow's stress,
your heart has never known recoil.
4 The cup of water given for you
still holds the freshness of your grace;
yet long these multitudes to view
the sweet compassion of your face.
5 O Master, from the mountainside,
make haste to heal these hearts of pain;
among these restless throngs abide;
O tread the city's streets again;
6 Till all the world shall learn your love,
and follow where your feet have trod;
till glorious from your heaven above
shall come the city of our God.

WELCOME: Rob Bickmore
GREETING: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
CALL TO WORSHIP: Sue Sarno
Our faith transforms us!
Our participation in Christian community transforms us.
But make no mistake, it is by God’s grace that this transformation takes place.
Come, let us embrace the grace.
Come, let us open ourselves to transformation in worship and ministry!
OPENING HYMN: “Amazing Grace” (UMH 378, verses 1-4) played by Marilyn Lee
1: Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now I am found,
was blind, but now I see.
2: 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
3: Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
'tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
4: The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

HOW GOD’S GRACE CALLS US TO A DEEPER STEWARDSHIP: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
OFFERTORY: “Sacrament” played by Marilyn Lee
PRAYER OF DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT: Pastor Schuyler Rhodes
CLOSING HYMN: “God of Grace and God of Glory” (UMH 577) played by Marilyn Lee
1: God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your power;
crown your ancient church's story,
bring it's bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the facing or this hour,
for the facing of this hour.
2: Lo! the hosts of evil around us
scorn the Christ, assail his ways!
From the fears that long have bound us
free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the living of these days,
for the living of these days.
3: Cure your children's warring madness;
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss your kingdom's goal,
less we miss your kingdom's goal.
4: Save us from weak resignation
to the evils we deplore;
let the gift of your salvation
be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
serving you whom we adore,
serving you who we adore.
